How to choose a dentist ... and why you should choose Carson & Acasio?

Updated: Jul 9

Kid throwing dart at target to help choose a new dentist.

Whether you are new in town, your dentist has moved on, or you simply desire a change, fortunately, like anything else in your life, there are many dentists to choose from.

Dr. Derek Carson & Dr. Mike Acasio

At Carson & Acasio Dentistry, and our sister practice Spanish Hills Dentistry, it doesn’t matter to us whether you need a cleaning and routine exam, are faced with a dental emergency, or need a complete mouth reconstruction … we are here to take care of your dental needs.

You have several more sophisticated options than the young man here tossing darts and hoping one will help him choose the right dentist.

Golden crown sitting on top of a tooth.

A few years back I was someone who needed a new dentist as I had recently moved to Oxnard. As I recall, I had a broken tooth which needed a new crown. I’m one of these nervous-in-the-service types who hates to be stuck in a dental chair for any period of time. I get extremely agoraphobic. The first thing I considered were my needs and priorities.

Anxious and worried young man.

Since anxiety and, secondarily, pain management were major issues for me, my first step was to do a web search on sleep sedation dentists which I had successfully and happily utilized in the past. Honestly, there weren’t that many choices, but number one in the search results was Carson & Carson Dentistry … the predecessor to Carson & Acasio.

Father and son, Drs. LeRoy & Derek Carson.

I was impressed with the fact that the practice was a father (LeRoy) and son (Derek) who had been serving patients in Ventura County for several decades. Both had their state licenses to administer IV sedation anesthesia.

After reviewing several other sites, my comfort level was not in who had the glitzyist web site, but who came across as compassionate and professional people, with a strong supporting staff, a modern and upscale facility and who offered the latest dental technology.

When I met for my evaluation, I had a good feeling. As an aside, but important consideration, is that one must feel good about the medical professionals who will be treating them. On one unhappy occasion, a GI doctor actually greeted me in the waiting room with a smile and a handshake which helped reduce my anxiety of what he was about to tell me.

With my desire to have IV sedation, I faced a major issue. Because you are being given a narcotic sedative which takes you into a state of semi-consciousness, you can’t drive home or take a transport service. Insurance and the laws require someone who knows you to ensure you arrive home safely. I had no ride. To my surprise, and joy, Dr. Derek offered to drive me home.

Come on. Of course, I was hooked. And I have been a Carson dental family patient ever since.

So here’s the long and the short of what I am suggesting:

  1. Define your needs (both in terms of the remedy you are looking for, and what you expect from your practitioner).

  2. Then do a search on those things you feel are important to you.

  3. Choose one or two to call and discuss your situation.

  4. Pick your number one choice and make an appointment for a consultation. Most dentists will provide a complimentary consultation. If you have a dental emergency or immediate need, step up the process and go for it.

  5. Once you are in the office, speak with the staff, ask for a tour, and meet with the dentist. When you review our website, take a look at the qualifications and personalities of our dentists. Depending on your specific needs, preferences and urgency, you can request an appointment with the dentist of your choice.

  6. The dentist will provide you with a treatment plan and our staff will work with your insurance company and share with you what the costs will be.

  7. Once you have made a decision, we will make whatever appointments are necessary and you will be on your way to happiness as a new patient.

Now, I’m not going to ask you to read a book about the many reasons why Carson & Acasio might be the right choice for you.

But we do have an awesome website which should answer all your questions about us and each of the services we offer. https://carson-acasio.com

If you still have questions, give us a call. We promise not to bite.
